bruneihalallogoBrunei Darussalam has developed a very good Halal standard because it is rigorous and pays a lot of attention to details. "It is clear to anyone in the Halal sector that Brunei takes Halal very seriously," Abdalhamid David Evans, Senior Analyst for Imarat Consultants and the consultant for the International Halal Market Conference 2009 (IHMC), said.

He spoke at yesterday's press briefing on the upcoming 4" IHMC, which will be held on August 1 and 2 at the International Convention Centre.

During the briefing at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, he said, Brunei has taken the strictest approach and if a product is Halal compliant in Brunei, it should be compliant anywhere else, because it should have exceeded the minimum standards.

"This puts Brunei in a very strong position," he said and added that Brunei, though small, can be a very important role model for countries around the world.

Brunei's standard for Halal food is comprehensive and is very good. It is certainly if not the best in the world then among the best in the world, Abdalhamid David Evans added.

SMALL businesses involved in the national halal agenda need to improve their understanding of branding as a tool to successfully market their products overseas and create joint-venture opportunities with foreign firms in the future, said the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR).

"They have to understand the structure... because the commercial deals (part of the Brunei Halal Brand) later on will require them to cut a deal with other companies," Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar said yesterday following a workshop organised by the ministry for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in the Brunei Halal Brand.

Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid stressed it is imperative that these SMEs understand what it means to be "riding on Brunei Darussalam's image" and widen their scope of possibilities.

Hjh Normah Suria Hayati Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Hj Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri related that the announcement would highlight the introduction of a mechanism for the implementation of the halal brand. However, she could not delve into further detail so as not to "spoil the surprise", she disclosed in a brief interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

With regard to the increasing competition in the halal products sector from neighbouring countries, the acting director noted that the global halal market is large and there is "more than enough room for everybody" to compete. She said that the idea was to take a different approach compared to other countries. Therefore, through the development of Brunei's halal brand, the country will have its own label and its own standards for halal products, she said.
